SUBOXONE Treatment for Opioid Dependence

SUBOXONE helps to begin and maintain continuity of treatment for dependence on shortacting opioids (like heroin or prescription painkillers). SUBOXONE was found to be most effective when used as a part of a comprehensive treatment plan that also includes counselling and psychosocial support.

Who Should Not Take SUBOXONE?

SUBOXONE may not be right for you. Be sure to mention all medical conditions to your provider, especially if you:
  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients in SUBOXONE
  • Have liver, kidney, lung, adrenal gland, or gallbladder problems
  • Have a head injury or brain problem
  • Have Addison's disease
  • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant

Tell your doctor especially if you take any medicines that may make you sleepy (such as; pain medecines, tranquilizers, antidepressant medicines, sleeping pills, anxiety medicines, or antihistamines). You should stop drinking before starting SUBOXONE.

SUBOXONE may not work for everyone. SUBOXONE has not been studied in children under the age of 18 years. Do not take SUBOXONE Film before the effects of other opioids have subsided, as you may experience severe withdrawal symptoms.

A Substance Abuse Treatment Plan May Include

  • Visiting a health care provider regularly to monitor treatment
  • Attending a counseling program run by a social worker, psychotherapist, or addiction counselor
  • Receiving support from a loved one, friend, family member, or sponsor who can help you adjust to life without dependence on opioid drugs
